All soap is made from two things: oils and lye. There is NO lye in the finished product, just as there isn’t any raw egg in a cake. The process that combines oils with lye is called saponification. The process that makes soap also makes glycerin. Handmade natural soap contains a lot of glycerin. Commercial soap manufacturers remove the glycerin and sell it to cosmetics manufacturers to put in their products. The value of the glycerin is actually higher than the value of the soap. We leave our glycerin in.
Oils determine the properties of the soap. These properties are generally: lather, gentleness and hardness of the bar.
Olive oil is famous for it skin kindly quality but a 100% olive oil bar is rather soft with very little lather. Some people prefer that. 100% coconut oil produces a hard bar with abundant lather, but some find it drying. We offer soap that is in between. We combine the lather of coconut oil with the skin kindly manners of olive oil.
Our natural lotion and butters All lotions are basically a combination of water, oils, thickeners, emulsifiers and preservatives. The idea is that the oils will add nutrients to the skin and the water will add moisture. Thickeners make it thick, the emulsifiers allow the water and the oil to mix. The preservatives keep the mixture from spoiling. The hard part is choosing the oils. Our lotion and body butter are made with many of the same oils as our soap. Primarily, Olive oil and Coconut oil, we also use Mango butter and Shea butter. The thickeners, emulsifiers and preservatives high quality industry standard.
Our ingredients
Oils: Both olive oil and coconut oil come in a vast range of quality. The highest quality of both oils comes from being cold pressed using no solvents. Our olive oil is Virgin first pressed oil, grown and pressed by Calaveras Olive Oil Company. The green color is from the olive oil, not a dye. Our coconut oil is also cold pressed and is organic plus Ovona and Kosher certified. Its hard to do much better in quality of oils.
Essential Oils: There are two types of scented oils used in soap: Fragrant Oils and Essential Oils. Fragrant Oils are synthetic scents in base oils. Essential oils are squeezed, steamed, or otherwise extracted from flowers and plants. We use only pure essential oils; Lavender, lime, and tea tree, to name a few. The quantity, as well as quality of our oils is obvious from the aroma of our soap and lotions.
